''Ten Thousand Miles to Kashgar"
Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre

Orchid Ensemble with special guest, Alan Kushan, santur

Cap Folk 'n 'Roots & Vancouver Sun Community Concert Series
Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts & Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission, ROC

"Ten Thousand Miles to Kashgar" is a concert presentation by the Orchid Ensemble, exploring the rich musical influences that the ancient Silk Road had on China. Featured will be the world premiere of Moshe Denburg's The Road to Kashgar, commissioned through the Canada Council for the Arts, a new arrangement of the zheng composition Muquam: Prelude and Dance, and a guest appearance of Alan Kushan, a renowned virtuoso on the Persian santur, the ancient hammer dulcimer.

Kashgar is an ancient city in Xin Jiang Province, western China, which was a key centre on the ancient Silk Road. An oasis in the middle of the Taklimakan Desert, Kashgar became an important meeting point of peoples from countless cultural and artistic backgrounds. Our own cultural oasis, Vancouver, has given birth to the Orchid Ensemble, who explore new approaches to performing Chinese music. This concert will be the first performance of a cross Canada tour.

Alan Kushan (Guest Musician) - santur

Alan Kushan is one of the most accomplished santur (hammer dulcimer) players in the world. He stands out not only for his realizations of traditional Persian compositions, but also for his innovative avante-garde soundscapes. A virtuoso in performing Persian traditional music, he is also a pioneering builder of modern Persian instruments. Not limited to the traditional approaches, Alan applies his own touch to the music that he performs, developed after experiencing other world musics.
