The Orchid Ensemble is presenting a concert of Canadian contemporary music inspired by Asian contemporary and ancient poetry on May 27, 2006 at the Norman Rothstein Theatre. The concert is preceded by a ˇ§Meet the Composersˇ¨ event on May 25 at the Vancouver Public Library and a series of workshops at the Britannia Secondary School as part of the schoolˇ¦s Asian Heritage Month Celebration.

Chinese poetry and music have been closely linked from the earliest times. Various forms of poetry throughout the dynasties had been sung, some accompanied by musical instruments and dance. This project brings together two elements of the very essence of a culture in the framework of New Music. The performance will be accompanied by a projection of Chinese calligraphy as a backdrop. A number of poems, which inspired the composers, will be written in real time. Digital images of original paintings reflecting the atmosphere in the compositions will be played.

This concert will feature the premiere of Hope Leeˇ¦s ˇ§Parting at Yang Kuanˇ¨, a Canada Council commission. Since 1979, Lee has been studying Chinese music, medieval and classical poetry, in particular the ideology, philosophy and notation of qin (Chinese 7-string zither) music, and applying the knowledge in contemporary music. Les has written a cycle of nine pieces, with each representing a particular time in Chinese history. ˇ§Parting at Yang Kuanˇ¨, inspired by a classical poem written in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD), represents a gate where people depart their earthy existence.

With an extensive catalogue of over 60 works, Armanini is one of Canadaˇ¦s pioneering composers in cross-cultural and Asian influenced works. His ˇ§Heartlandˇ¨ suite written for the Orchid Ensemble in 1998 has been released on the ensembleˇ¦s debut CD named after this piece. A native Vancouverite, Armaniniˇ¦s musical directions shift with the growing Asian population, especially Asian musicians. Armanini is forging a particularly Vancouver style of music, born from his inner response to the cityˇ¦s changing surroundings. He has developed an ear for the Asian instruments, using a palette of both western and eastern instruments and musical styles to their best effect.

Ya-wen Wangˇ¦s ˇ§Life, Death, Tears, Dreamˇ¨, a set of four vignettes, based on four short poems by Taiwanese contemporary poet Hsiung Hung, completes itself as a song cycle - both musically and philosophically. The poetic ideas in the text led to a musical structure in its cyclical form, repetition (with difference) as well as the tonal/model and timing treatment. This composition was inspired by Gamelan music and commissioned by the Egret Ladies Choir to perform with the Orchid Ensemble.

Lan Tung, leader of the Orchid Ensemble, has been the main arranger for its repertoire. She has arranged two pieces from Chinese classical repertoire for the collaboration with flautist Mark Takeshi McGregor. ˇ§Three Variations of Plum Blossomˇ¨, the most famous composition for the scholarly instrument qin or 7-string zither, was first played on Chinese flute. The 2000-year-old ˇ§Hujiaˇ¨ is based on the long poem written by Lady Cai with melody for singing and accompaniment on the qin.

A passionate advocate of new music, Mark McGregorˇ¦s performance of contemporary Japanese and Korean music has met with critical acclaim. His employment of breath and space matches the philosophy and rhythm of ancient Chinese poetry; at the same time, his fusing of musical styles into contemporary works share a common interest with the Orchid Ensemble.

Throughout the month of May 2006, the Orchid Ensemble will work with a class of students at the Britannia Secondary School in East Vancouver. The relationship between music and poetry will be discussed and demonstrated in musical selections. The students will be guided to write poetry to recite at the concert. A few students from the class will also participate in creating an improvisation-based new work with the musicians.
