Canada.

This Friday, Nov 18, on CBC's The World In
Performance, you can hear the Orchid Ensemble's spring
2005 concert at the Royal Conservatory of Music in
Toronto. The ensemble's Lan Tung is honored to share
this broadcast with her teacher Hindustani violinist
Kala Ramnath, in concert at Glenn Gould Studio.

Road to Kashgar recieved JUNO (Global Album) and
Western Canadian Music Award (Instrumental Music)
nominations.
The Orchid Ensemble's latest CD "Road to Kashgar" is
inspired by the music of the diverse peoples and
beautiful landscapes along the Silk Road. Influences
include Indian, Persian, Jewish, Uighur (North West of
China), and, of course, Chinese, with a contemporary
expression. A fine gift for the Christmas season, it

Concerts at the Kennedy Center and Smithsonian
Institute, Washington, D.C.
The Orchid Ensemble has just returned home from a
successful tour, including concerts at these
prestigious venues in DC. The concert on Nov 3, 2005
at the Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center can be

On Nov 6, the ensemble gave an informative concert
presentation at the Freer-Sackler Gallery, in
conjunction with its exhibition of Chinese musical
instruments and art works. The concert was preceded by
a gallery talk by ensemble member and
ethnomusicologist Mei Han.

Studying abroad
The Orchid Ensemble's percussionist Jonathan Bernard
is traveling to Egypt this winter to study Arabic hand
drumming techniques and styles. Mei Han will travel to
Vietnam to study dan tranh, a Vietnamese version of
the Chinese zheng, and researching its relation to the
ancient Chaozhou music in southern China. No snowy
white Christmas for them this year.


Next Concert Production - Norman Rothstein Theatre,
May 27, 2005
The Orchid Ensemble will produce its next concert
exploring the inspiration and relationship with Asian
ancient and modern poetry. The concert will feature
special guest flautist Mark McGregor and a Canadian
premiere of Parting at Yang Kuan by Calgary composer
Hope Lee, commissioned by the Orchid Ensemble. Thanks
for the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
