Flying white – 飞白
Jonathan & Lan & Dailin performing w/ Turning Point Ensemble & Wen Wei Dance, as part of the Push Festival
SFU Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre https://pushfestival.ca/shows/flying-white
Vancouver, BC
Flying white is a rare and extraordinary form of Chinese calligraphy that jumps and leaps on the paper surface in graceful beautiful strokes, the black ink revealing a white background. Mobile and delicate, flying white is like meteors passing through the sky, or hair fluttering in the wind.
Flying white – 飞白, co-created by Wen Wei Wang, Owen Underhill, and Dorothy Chang, is inspired by the motion and aesthetic of this calligraphy and representations of elements including rice, paper, water, silk, and ink. The piece integrates six dancers and an intercultural ensemble of twelve musicians comprised of members of Turning Point Ensemble and the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra from Taipei. Flying white – 飞白 explores the space between black and white, between inhale and exhale, between east and west, and between sound and movement.
Co-created by Wen Wei Wang (Artistic Director of Wen Wei Dance), Owen Underhill (Composer, Artistic Director of Turning Point Ensemble), Dorothy Chang (Composer)
Choreographer: Wen Wei Wang (in collaboration with the dancers)
Composers: Owen Underhill and Dorothy Chang

Katajjaq & Khoomii – Orchid Ensemble (Vancouver) and Oktoécho (Montreal), Sound of Dragon Music Festival
Annex Theatre
Vancouver, BC
Katajjaq (Inuit throat singing) and Khoomii (Mongolian throat singing) meet in the collaboration between Orchid Ensemble (Vancouver) and Oktoécho (Montreal). Katajjaq and Khoomii are both ancestral songs that reproduce the sounds in the nature, such as water flow, wind, echoes in the mountains, and sounds of animals and birds. Coincidentally, these are also the major themes in traditional Chinese music. In addition, the two ensembles offer unique cross-cultural instrumentations. This project is a hybrid creation that crosses over Inuit, Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, and Arabic music. It will feature Canadian composers Katia Makdissi-Warren and Lan Tung.

36 musicians, 2 engineers 3 countries, 2 continents, 36 improvised recordings, 2 large ensemble works
Vancouver, BC
presented by NOW Orchestra Society
From March to June 2020, during the most intense period of lockdown and the uncertainty of the Covid-19 Pandemic, 38 artists collaborated through time folding / folding time. Isolated musicians improvised in their homes in sequence; files moved from musician to engineer, to the next musician and so on…. Improvisers created in the present, imagined what might come and responded to what had occurred. Engineers layered the performances in stages, creating architectural master halls from the sonic and visual material of the musicians’ locations. The result was 38 films. The passion, generosity, vulnerability, humour and strength in films document artists transcending separation through collaboration.
