“Rising Dragon, Soaring Merlion” is the meeting of two world class chamber ensembles of Chinese roots: Ding Yi Music Company is Singapore’s most prestigious Chinese chamber ensemble, trademarking Singapore Chinese chamber music with its dedication to showcasing a vast repertoire that ranges from traditional Chinese music to contemporary interpretations and cross-genre works. Sound of Dragon Ensemble creates/presents new works for the combination of Chinese and western instruments, representing original Canadian intercultural art music, crossing over Chinese traditions, contemporary music, world fusion, and improvisation. Together they will perform music written by Canadian (Alice Ping Yee Ho, Farshid Samandari, Jordan Nobles, Moshe Denburg, Lan Tung), Singaporean (Chenwei Wang), and Chinese (Jianmin Wang, Nixia Li, Chenayo Li) composers. This concert is Ding Yi Music Company’s Canadian debut. Taiwan’s internationally acclaimed conductor Chih Sheng Chen and Ding Yi’s conductor Dedric Wong will share the podium to lead the ensembles.

The Sound of Dragon Society is presenting a free improvisation workshop for string players. We welcome the participation of musicians on any bowed string instruments from any culture, including but not limited to violin, viola, cello, double bass, erhu, kamanche, and sarangi. The workshop is open to professional players, community players, and students interested in exploring/advancing improvisation skills and sharing the love of bowed string instruments in a cross-cultural setting. The participants will work with the Vancouver Erhu Quartet, led by Lan Tung (composer & erhu/Chinese violin) and Parmela Attariwala (violin & viola), to explore different textures, improvisation approaches, and graphic notation. The workshop will lead to a 20 minute performance involving the participants with the Vancouver Erhu Quartet on Sunday Dec 10 afternoon at the Annex, Vancouver.
